Scrap company owner charged after stolen buses are shredded

Posted on March 11, 2013

CHICAGO — Police said the owner of a scrap company where school buses were destroyed last week has been charged with illegal possession of auto titles, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Eight buses were stolen on Thursday night from Sunrise School Bus and Charter Service’s yard. Because the buses were equipped with GPS, police were able to track their whereabouts, and they were discovered at SRV Metal Scrapper and Gonzalez Auto Parts & Dismantling, where three of the buses had been shredded.

Four people were taken into custody in the case, including the owner of the scrap company, Sergio Quintero. He was arrested on Friday afternoon, and late Saturday, he was charged with felony possession of a title or registration that has not been assigned. The Chicago Tribune reports that those involved in scrapping stolen vehicles will often use partially blank title documents to make it appear that they held title to a stolen vehicle prior to its being scrapped.
