ATLANTA — A man aimed a rifle at a school bus carrying children and dropped a notebook containing bus numbers on Monday, prompting police to escort school buses and guard students waiting at bus stops, The Associated Press (AP) reports.

The man was confronted by witnesses and fled, but police discovered the rifle and notebook at the scene. One witness chased the man but stopped when the suspect fired a second gun at him, according to authorities.

Buses carrying students to and from six schools will be escorted by police through Friday, which is the last day of the school year, Clayton County Police Officer Phong Nguyen told AP.
