WILMINGTON, N.C. — A girl who was found unconscious on her school bus Wednesday morning has died, The Associated Press reports.  

The 8-year-old girl was found unconscious in her wheelchair when the bus for special-needs students arrived at the Rachel Freeman School of Engineering. She was taken to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where she passed away, according to a statement on the New Hanover County Schools website.

The cause of death was not immediately known.
