Bus stop arm, flashing lights no longer required in city's school zones

WETASKIWIN, Alberta — School bus drivers do not need to activate their bus' emergency flashing lights or extend the stop arm in a school bus zone located on or adjacent to school grounds within Wetaskiwin city limits after the city changed its traffic bylaw.

A third and final reading of bylaw 1281-11 was carried unanimously at a regular city council meeting on Oct. 11, The Wetaskiwin Times reports. The matter was tabled two weeks earlier, as Section 2-G operation of school buses had sparked much debate.

School bus drivers will still have to activate the stop arm and alternating flashing lights in all other areas within the city limits.

    From the original story: Mac Lean said students are "not necessarily dropped off at a corner, but they must proceed to the sidewalk and then proceed themselves to the intersection and cross." He later added that according to city bylaws, the only place you are allowed to cross a street is at an intersection or crosswalk. Our industry does not seem to realize that the school bus is a huge hazard at bus stops, and a horrific blind spot as well. Simply add children to escalate the hazards involved. Several cities in Canada ban the use of the bus stop sign and crossing lights, requiring students to walk to the nearest intersection and cross after the bus has departed. Myself, in agreement at schools, provided school crossing guards are available.
