District to eliminate more than 100 bus stops

Posted on April 19, 2011

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. — North Attleboro Public Schools will eliminate more than 100 bus stops in September to save $47,000.

A preliminary list of stops that are up for elimination was released this week, The Sun Chronicle reports. The list will be finalized over the summer. All of the stops on the list are outside of the district's current transportation guidelines, which surpass Massachusetts' busing requirements.

The state requires that districts provide transportation for students in kindergarten to sixth grade who live more than two miles from school. North Attleboro transports students in kindergarten through grade five if they live more than 1.25 miles from school, and students in grade six through 12 if they live more than two miles from school. This will not change with the proposed bus stop eliminations.

The eliminations will allow the district to use 19 buses instead of 20, saving the aforementioned $47,000 per year. This will help to address a $2 million budget gap in the coming fiscal year, according to the newspaper.

Next year, bus passes will be issued to students who are eligible for transportation, according to Allen Avenue School Principal Gideon Gaudette, who handles transportation for the district. The plan is still being refined.
