Civil citation sought for illegal bus passing

FREDERICK, Md. — Eleven of Frederick County Public Schools' buses are equipped with two cameras to capture photos and video of cars that pass stopped school buses, but a citation can only be issued by a police officer who witnessed the violation, according to The Frederick News-Post.

A bill on the matter before the General Assembly earlier this year was not approved, but the school district plans to present a proposal next year that would create a civil citation for violations in Frederick.

Images of vehicles' front and rear license plates, time, date, GPS position and speed data captured by the camera system are currently collected and sent to local law enforcement. More than 200 violations have been recorded over the last three fiscal years, Director of Transportation Veronica Lowe told the News-Post.

School officials want to charge violators a fine of around $75 to $125, with the hope that the cameras would begin to eliminate violations through deterrence.
