Conference to cover special-needs transportation issues

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. — The Massachusetts Association for Pupil Transportation (MAPT) will hold its 2010 conference at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel and Trade Center here on March 25.

Attorney and consultant Peggy Burns will speak at the event, discussing the importance of generating a strong level of communication between a district’s special-education, transportation and business departments to reduce liabilities and improve the quality of service to students.

In a morning session titled “The Law Looks at Training,” Burns is scheduled to talk about the legal issues related to the training of special-needs school bus drivers, key training components as well as sharing IEP information with transportation personnel.

In an afternoon session, “A Framework for Decision-Making About Special-Needs Transportation,” Burns will address such topics as participation by transportation professionals in the process of serving special-needs students; methodology, equipment and timing considerations; and strategies for avoiding problems.
