The school bus manufacturer increases the area of responsibility for Warner Bus Industries from the 251,366-square-mile province of Saskatchewan to also include the 250,946-square-mile province of Manitoba. Among the new products from the nearly 130 exhibitors is a quasi-static three-point activity seat from Freedman Seating Co., a camera system from Fortress Mobile that captures stop-arm violators and a condenser from American Cooling Technology. 10-year-old Mauriene nominated Joyce St. John, who also drove the youngster’s mother and four siblings. Mauriene wrote in the Thomas Built Buses contest that St. John “taught us manners” and expected riders to help keep the bus clean.

The school bus manufacturer names Whayne Supply Co. of Louisville, Ky., its 2011 Dealer of the Year. President and CEO Kelley Platt says Whayne helped Kentucky obtain the first and biggest federal hybrid school bus grant in the U.S., and that the dealer provides excellent customer service. Regional dealers were also recognized.

The school bus manufacturer is awarded a 2011 North Carolina Mobile Clean Air Renewable Energy award in the category of Technology/Fuel Provider. The company operates the nation's first zero-waste-to-landfill school bus manufacturing facility and produces both compressed natural gas and hybrid-electric school buses.

The company's SafeGuard XChange product line will soon be available to order on the manufacturer's buses. SafeGuard XChange allows school bus operations to buy standard seating now and then exchange seating modules to add or configure belts at a later date.

The school bus manufacturer has zero-waste-to-landfill operations, meaning that everything received or produced by Thomas Built is used, reused, recycled or sold, and nothing is sent to a landfill. The company is also participating in a solar panel project, and all of its manufacturing facilities became ISO 14001 certified last year.

For the sixth annual contest, students in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to submit essays of at least 90 words to nominate their favorite school bus drivers. The grand prize winner will receive a laptop computer, a Thomas Built jacket and a Saf-T-Liner C2 school bus lunch box, and the nominated driver will receive a $1,000 Visa gift card.
