The San Marcos (Texas) City Council has approved a $300 civil penalty for illegally passing a school bus following a 15-week study conducted by BusGuard, a company that provides stop-arm cameras for school buses, that shed light on the severity of the problem.

The association recognizes Sen. Catharine Young’s introduction of legislation that would allow evidence collected by stop-arm cameras to be used to prosecute motorists who pass stopped school buses illegally. If enacted, the legislation would also establish a minimum fine of between $250 and $400 with no points for a first violation when the violation is based on camera evidence, with increasing penalties for repeat offenses.

Seth Grove, who introduced the legislation, says utilizing the cameras “can provide increased accountability of drivers and remove the burden from school bus drivers to bear witness to all facets of the violations when their primary goal is to ensure the safe transportation of the children in their charge.”
