Bus drivers could be given authority to search students

Under a proposal before an Indiana district’s school board, a driver would have to have a reasonable suspicion that a student has an item or substance that puts others on the bus in danger. The driver would then have to get permission from the district’s transportation department before searching a student or his or her belongings.

Student charged with felony for bomb threat

Police say that a school bus driver saw the 11-year-old boy on the bus with a device that resembled a bomb, and that the driver heard the boy threaten to detonate it on the bus or in a school. SWAT teams determine that there are no explosives on the device, but police take the boy into custody.

Police charge Evelyn Guzman with risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment. Footage from the surveillance camera on her bus allegedly shows her texting; police believe Guzman sent and received 1,068 text messages while operating a bus between April 6 and May 15, 2010.

Police conclude an investigation of alleged inappropriate behavior by aide Bobby Shrout, who was accused of kissing a student on the cheek. After conducting interviews and reviewing bus surveillance footage, authorities determine that Shrout did not commit a criminal offense.
