EPA blogger touts yellow bus benefits

In a recent post for the agency's blog Greenversations, Christine Koester writes that the school bus has been part of American education for “generations,” and that in the U.S., school buses use 2.3 billion gallons less fuel every year than if people drove their children to school. Koester also touches on the environmental benefits of school buses.

Superintendent reprimanded for personal use of bus, driver

Eric Becoats, superintendent of Durham (N.C.) Public Schools, used a school activity bus and driver in June to go to private events and paid an invoice for the cost of the bus and driver. He apologizes and says that he was informed of policies prohibiting personal use of the vehicles after he used the bus.

In the new video by Da Rich Kidzz — a Minneapolis hip hop group ranging in age from 10 to 13 — the youngsters ride a yellow bus and chant the refrain “my school bus is my limo.” While the spot is sponsored by Kmart and plugs back-to-school gear, it also carries messages that seem to promote school bus ridership.
Charles Poland named a School Bus Champion

The Alabama school bus driver receives a posthumous School Bus Champion Award from the American School Bus Council for his actions to protect his bus passengers during a standoff with a gunman. Dale County Schools Superintendent Donny Bynum, who accepted the award on behalf of Poland’s family, says, “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about Mr. Poland and what he did. He is the definition of a hero.”
47-year school bus driver honored in New York

Pat Beesmer, a driver for Ethan Allen Transportation, is named School Bus Driver of the Year in Ulster County. A mother of three kids who have been passengers on Beesmer's bus says that she is "very tuned in to every child's needs — those who occasionally get bus sick, and those who miss Mom or Dad on their first day of school."

TV spot focuses on CNG school buses

Long-running public television program MotorWeek does a segment on Pennsylvania's Lower Merion School District, which has close to half of its 114 buses running on compressed natural gas (CNG). The district plans to go all-CNG when more fueling stations are available.

In an effort to curb tobacco use among youths, ClearWay Minnesota launches a commercial that depicts school bus passengers lighting up. It will mark the second time he has participated in a Love the Bus celebration — the first was in 2011 in Takoma Park, Md.
LaHood to step down as transportation secretary

Ray LaHood announces on Tuesday to the employees of the U.S. Department of Transportation that he will not serve a second term, but he says he will stay on until his successor is confirmed. LaHood showed support for the pupil transportation industry during his term, calling for funding of a program to promote the benefits of yellow buses, attending industry events and taking on such issues as distracted driving.
