Officials from school districts and bus companies on the East Coast and in the Midwest report easy starting, quick warm-up and quiet operation of the propane Vision school buses in their fleets during the recent cold snap. Blue Bird says propane autogas’ natural properties keep the fuel in a constant liquid form, free from freezing or gelling, and the liquid form provides better control of the air-to-fuel ratio, resulting in excellent start-up dependability.
Utah bill would provide $20M for alt-fuel school buses

House Bill 41 would allow the state Board of Education to award a grant to a school district or charter school to replace a school bus manufactured before 2002 with a bus that uses compressed natural gas, propane or clean diesel fuel. The grant could also be used to install an alternative-fuel fueling station and to retrofit an operation’s maintenance facility to service alternative-fuel school buses.

Texas district cuts fuel costs by 33% with propane buses

Seguin Independent School District has been operating propane-powered school buses for six years, and it currently has 28 buses running on the fuel in its fleet, with plans to purchase more in the future. In addition to the savings in fuel costs, officials say the district has saved $500,000 since 2008 through the initial reimbursement for the purchase of the buses and the rebate on the fuel.

The Wisconsin-based contractor purchases 10 new Blue Bird Propane-Powered Vision school buses and 10 Micro Bird propane autogas buses to serve Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District, and the company marks the event with an open house at its facility. According to a recent segment on MotorWeek, Eastern Carver County Schools has started a "slow but steady process" of replacing more than 100 diesel school buses with propane-powered units. The show's host reports that although the new propane buses cost more, they yielded fuel cost savings of $60,000 last year.

A fire on a Blue Bird propane school bus on Monday likely originated in a wheel end assembly and did not compromise the propane fuel tanks, an independent fire investigator finds. There was no one on the bus at the time of the fire, and the engine was off.

Propane buses save Indiana district 50% on fuel costs

Tippecanoe School Corp. purchased five Propane-Powered Blue Bird Vision school buses last year, and Director of Transportation Kevin Neafie says the district pays nearly half the price for propane compared to diesel, and that so far, the operation has saved $10,000 on these five buses alone.
