NAPT News & Views — Why you should love the bus

Mid-August through mid-September each year is the perfect time to let everyone know about a project that began in 2007 called “Love the Bus.” I encourage everyone who cares about school buses to learn more about what NAPT and its partners in the American School Bus Council are doing to promote the yellow school bus and help us by spreading the word.

Anthony Foxx: School bus safety data are ‘remarkable’

The U.S. Secretary of Transportation attends Friday’s main Love the Bus event in High Point, N.C., and says school bus drivers are “unsung heroes.” In a follow-up blog post on Monday, he says that the data on school transportation indicate that the safest way for students to get to school is on a school bus with a “well-trained driver.” He adds that the data are “even more remarkable when you think about just how many students are riding the bus every day.”
Communities go yellow for ‘Love the Bus’

At a celebration held at Transportation South, Harry Leach of Trussville City Schools is named Alabama's Love the Bus driver of the year. A moment of silence is observed for Charles Poland, the driver who was fatally shot while protecting his passengers in Midland City.

LaHood celebrates ‘Love the Bus’ in Virginia

Outgoing U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood visits Tuckahoe Elementary School in Arlington on Tuesday, where students sing and rap for him. LaHood tells the children, “I want you kids to thank your drivers when you go home today. They care a lot about getting you to and from school safely.”

Outgoing U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood accepts an invitation to serve as the lead speaker at the American School Bus Council’s main “Love the Bus” event at an elementary school in Arlington, Va., on Feb. 12. It will mark the second time he has participated in a Love the Bus celebration — the first was in 2011 in Takoma Park, Md.
Alabama’s Transportation South to host ‘Love the Bus’ celebration

A celebration on Valentine’s Day at the school bus dealership will honor the state’s best school bus drivers, as voted by students, parents and teachers. Alabama state pupil transportation director Joe Lightsey will speak, and more than 150 school and community leaders from throughout the region are expected to attend.
LaHood to step down as transportation secretary

Ray LaHood announces on Tuesday to the employees of the U.S. Department of Transportation that he will not serve a second term, but he says he will stay on until his successor is confirmed. LaHood showed support for the pupil transportation industry during his term, calling for funding of a program to promote the benefits of yellow buses, attending industry events and taking on such issues as distracted driving.
Markus Videnieks joins ASBC team

Videnieks will coordinate the execution of American School Bus Council priorities and lead various outreach efforts. He was previously a vice president at a large Washington, D.C., government relations firm, focusing on transportation issues and the legislative agendas of nonprofit hospitals and universities.
Okla. district to celebrate Love the Bus with hockey

Christy Clemons, assistant director of transportation for Norman Public Schools, partners with the Oklahoma City Barons hockey team and the Oklahoma Association for Pupil Transportation to put on "Love the Bus Hockey Night" to honor bus drivers and monitors. Clemons tells SBF she hopes the event will inspire other districts in the state to celebrate Love the Bus month.

Arizona and Michigan operations honor drivers, aides

As part of Love the Bus month in February, Portage Public Schools in Michigan and Dysart Unified School District in Arizona hold events for employees. Drivers for Portage Public Schools receive certificates of recognition and lapel pins for safe driving.
