Mike Shedor will oversee the school bus contractor's Kansas and central Missouri territories, including locations in Jefferson City, Kansas City and Columbia in Missouri, and Olathe, Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley in Kansas. The business manager for a Massachusetts school district proposes using district-owned buses for student transportation, saying it would save $62,000 this year, but the district's school committee rejects the proposal. The committee’s vice chairperson says he could not see long-term savings with the plan, and the longevity of the buses was an issue for him.

Missouri school district acquires lot for new district-operated fleet

The district's board of education purchases the lot, which includes an office and maintenance facility, from its contractor. School officials believe that having a district-operated fleet will save money in anticipation of major budget cuts; the district also switches to a three-tier bus system to further cut costs.
First Student acquires Star Shuttle Co.

The contractor began operating the school and charter transportation service provider’s approximately 70 buses under the Star Shuttle name on Oct. 30. Star Shuttle contracts have been transferred to First Student, and all 140 employees who passed stringent background checks were offered employment with the company.

Sir Moir Lockhead, who has been with the company for 21 years, will hand over executive responsibilities on Nov. 1 and retire on March 31, 2011. He will assist the company and his successor, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Executive Tim O'Toole, in the transition.

First Student drivers to test skills in safety competition

Fifteen of the contractor’s employees will participate in the National School Transportation Association’s 40th Annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition this Saturday and Sunday in St. Louis. Competitors will complete a driving skills challenge and a written exam.

The contractor began serving Berkeley School District 87 on July 1. Under the three-year agreement, First Student is providing the district with 17 buses, each of which is equipped with a child-check reminder system, a crossing gate and a GPS system.

Under a three-year agreement that will begin on Aug. 1, the company will serve a Minnesota school district, providing transportation services for special-needs students and a total of 27 new buses. First Student will also continue to transport the district’s regular-ed students with a fleet of 49 buses.

Under a three-year agreement, the contractor will serve Columbus City Schools beginning July 1, operating more than 270 of the district’s routes. The company’s three-year contract with Oak Park Schools will begin with the 2010-11 school year. It will provide regular and special-education busing for students.
