Blood samples have been taken from the driver of a BMW and his two passengers to determine if they had been using drugs or alcohol prior to fatally striking a pedestrian and crashing into the back of a school bus on Monday. A manslaughter charge is likely to be pursued against the driver if he is found to have been under the influence.

Don and Kimberly Mair have asked a Florida school district’s board to support their efforts to get warning signs posted at bus stops to alert motorists that there might be children in the area. The couple’s daughter, Gabby, was fatally hit by a car in June after being dropped off by her school bus.

The trainee driver had passed the "S" endorsement written test and was undergoing the required hours of training. He had been scheduled to finalize his skills assessment for the endorsement last Wednesday, two days after the accident. The school district will now review the training for all of its bus drivers to ensure that they are fully certified.

Deaths from motor vehicle traffic crashes fell to 33,808 last year; there were 33,186 fatalities in 1950. Last year also saw the lowest fatality and injury rates ever recorded: 1.13 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, according to data released last week.
School bus driver killed in crash with SUV

The bus driver was traveling westbound on a highway when the SUV, which was traveling eastbound, drifted into the westbound lane and collided head-on with the bus; both vehicles then caught fire. The driver and passenger in the SUV also died in the accident.

In the first accident, a school bus driver went through an intersection and a semi truck collided with it. Four children were injured. In the second accident, another bus from the same district was rear-ended by a car. The driver of the car was transported to a hospital for treatment; the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Students will begin classes at St. James School District this Thursday, a week after a fatal accident involving two school buses. Counselors will be on hand and the district is also organizing a fundraiser dinner/silent auction to support those affected by the incident. A vigil and a service were held last Friday for the teens killed in the crash.

In an accident on a Missouri highway, a pickup truck slams into the back of a tractor trailer cab that had slowed for traffic. A school bus strikes the pickup from behind and is rear-ended by the other bus. A girl on one of the buses is fatally injured, as is the driver of the pickup.
Pennsylvania DOT finalizes expanded access to driving records
