Bus driver's medical episode prompts safety training

Albuquerque (N.M.) Public Schools’ student transportation services division is instructing its bus passengers on how to stop a bus if the driver is unable to. The training is implemented after Rhonda Carlsen boards her daughters’ bus to stop it because the driver is incapacitated. She discusses the incident with SBF, and Roger Garcia, co-interim director for the transportation division, discusses the components of the training.

When the tornado hit Henryville on March 2, the city sustained severe damage, but West Clark Community Schools’ bus passengers were uninjured thanks to the actions of the district’s transportation staff and administration team. As Director of Transportation Jim Scroggin tells SBF, the employees monitored the weather, and the bus drivers and students sought shelter in buildings.
Videos to instruct on school bus crisis response

The set of DVDs from Safe Havens International will cover such topics as why video tabletops and mental simulation exercises are effective at improving employees’ performance under life-and-death conditions. The organization has been using the scenarios in the videos for training purposes at school districts and to evaluate their level of preparedness. Safe Havens Executive Director Michael Dorn discusses the findings with SBF.
