Durham to serve Michigan district under 3-year contract

The school bus contractor’s agreement with Kenowa Hills Public Schools begins Sept. 1, and the contract is the company’s first in western Michigan. Durham will use 34 buses to serve six schools and more than 2,400 student riders, with a plan to replace a significant portion of the fleet over time, officials say.

The school bus contractor’s agreement with Hardin County Schools in Savannah is scheduled to begin July 1 in preparation for the upcoming school year. Durham will serve seven schools with 43 buses that will be equipped with GPS and video cameras.

Student transportation provider Durham School Services is collecting emergency supplies for the victims of the devastating storm in Oklahoma. Students from Guthrie, Okla., have also brought a school bus stocked with supplies to Moore, which was hit by a tornado that was more than a mile wide.

The first responders explored five styles of school buses and could see how each emergency exit worked, including the different door options and roof hatches. As part of Earth Week, the school bus contractor touts its year-round efforts to protect the environment, including an idling reduction program. The company also launches its second annual “Slim Down Challenge,” which is a 10-week competition that involves groups of four to seven employees aiming to score the best in percentage of weight lost.

The Adopt-a-School program calls for employees to donate personal time to enrich the school experience for children across the U.S.

Beginning in August, the school bus contractor will serve the School District of Beloit (Wis.) and Red Bud (Ill.) Community School Unit #132. For the first district, Durham will operate routes with 33 buses, and for the latter district, the company will operate routes with 23 buses.

Longtime Durham general manager retires

Marilee Mayes retired from the position at the school bus contractor’s Hutchinson, Kan., terminal on Friday after 27 years on the job. Mayes oversaw the student transportation for Hutchinson Unified School District 308, and she now serves the school system as a substitute school bus driver.
Durham School Services wins first Ga. contract

Officials say the school bus contractor’s five and a half year agreement with Peach County Schools in Fort Valley is its first in the state, and that Durham now operates in 32 states. Durham operates 38 routes for Peach County Schools, transporting 3,500 students daily.

The contractor will serve Newport (Wash.) School District and St. Helens Public Schools in Portland under five-year agreements that will begin in July for the upcoming school year. Durham will operate 78 routes for Newport and 28 routes for St. Helens.

Durham School Services will operate 97 home-to-school routes and 109 buses for Rochester (Mich.) Community Schools starting in July. The company reportedly plans to hire as many of the district's drivers, monitors, mechanics and staff as possible, and officials say the contract will save the district approximately $4.7 million over the three-year period.

Under a three-year agreement with the Burrillville School Department in Harrisville, R.I., the company will operate 27 home-to-school routes and 34 buses beginning with the 2012-13 school year. Durham’s contract with Burnsville-Eagan-Savage Independent School District 191 in Burnsville, Minn., is reportedly the company’s first in the state, and it will operate 100 buses for the district.

Durham raises $10K for Special Olympics chapter

Employees for the school bus contractor participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge in Lake Bluff, Ill., and raise $10,780 for Special Olympics Illinois Far West Suburban/Area 2, which serves athletes with intellectual disabilities in DuPage, Kane and Kendall counties. Durham also donates bus service to transport the plungers to and from the event location.

Kirk Flach joins the school bus company in the role, where he will oversee all aspects of its operations in North America. Flach, who has more than 15 years’ experience in the industry, was most recently senior vice president of operations for National Express Corp.
