Denver district ‘stuffs the bus’ for children in need

Over the holidays, transportation and staff district-wide at Denver Public Schools donated clothes to benefit the nonprofit organization Denver Children’s Advocacy Center. Officials say the busload of items was delivered on Jan. 23, and the clothing will help more than 100 children.

On a night of fierce 60 mph winds, a large sign blew into Doug Hoffacker's car on the freeway. Veteran school bus driver Susan Munoz blocked traffic from the disabled car, contacted emergency personnel and went to check on Hoffacker.

The director of transportation and fleet at Adams 12 Five Star Schools in Thornton, Colo., has orchestrated adjustments to school bell times to make busing more efficient, for an overall savings of $900,000. He has also taken steps to help other districts become more efficient, serving as chair of the Metro Area Transportation Efficiency Study, a program that uses metrics to allow districts to compare themselves to others of a similar size and to find efficiencies.

The transportation department at Denver Public Schools will deliver school supplies to students displaced by the Waldo Canyon fire, which killed two people and destroyed nearly 350 homes. Nicole Portee, executive director of transportation services, says that the district and the community “united to rally around the needs of these students.”

Officials at Mesa County Valley School District say the change is “the result of further budget reductions the district is facing.” School bus service will be provided for elementary students who live more than two miles from school and for middle and high school students who live more than three miles from school.

All members of the House Education Committee in the Colorado General Assembly have rejected a bill that would have required school buses purchased statewide after June 30, 2010, to be equipped with lap-shoulder seat belts, postponing the legislation indefinitely.
