In this five-part series, he shares his longtime desire to become a bus driver and the path that brought him to the industry. In this segment of the series, Lehman writes about his first experiences on a school bus as a student.
Bill aimed at protecting students on private roads approved

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signs into law House Bill 2170, which amends the current law to state that school bus drivers must engage their bus’ stop arm and flashing lights while students are boarding or disembarking on a private road or driveway. Officials say the bill will take effect 90 days after the current legislative session ends.
Man boards bus, leaves loaded gun magazine

Jeremy West follows a student on the Arizona district’s bus, and he convinces an adult bus aide that he is accompanying the student. After West leaves the bus, another student finds a fully loaded 9 mm magazine on the seat where West had been sitting. Police arrest him on Thursday, and the district is making changes to its policy on allowing parents on school buses.
Bill would require motorists to stop for buses on private roads

Current Arizona law requires motorists to stop for school buses that are loading or unloading students on public highways. A bill under consideration in the state Legislature would amend the law for it to apply to private roads and driveways as well, but it would not apply to a bus that is stopped in a parking lot.

After the Jan. 29 incident in Alabama in which a man boarded a school bus, fatally shot the driver and took a 5-year-old student hostage, a director of transportation in Arizona wrote this letter to his staff to address any concerns about their safety.

Glendale Elementary School District acquires six Blue Bird propane buses and seven Collins propane buses — the district's first powered by the alternative fuel. Canyon State Bus Sales' Phil Polizzatto calls the district's decision "both financially and environmentally responsible."
District collects toys for special-needs students

Washington Elementary School District #6 in Phoenix provides the small toys to these passengers to offer them comfort in stressful situations. Transportation Supervisor for Special Education Antonio Mlynek says three Walmart stores in the state donated $250 to assist with the purchases.
Boy found by highway after riding bus
August 21, 2012
The boy decides to ride the school bus instead of waiting for his parents to pick him up. He is reportedly dropped off a mile from home and wanders along the highway. Officials at the district where the boy attends school now require more teachers to stand by the buses to monitor who gets on them.
