This is my first time posting, so be gentle....

I took this job about a year ago, we run about 10 buses daily through the summer, great conditions (mountain road, mag chloride, lots of hills). So far my guys are doing a great job keeping this fleet of old buses running, but there is one bus that is starting to get a bit frustrating. It's the old Ford, they retired it a few years ago, but I'd like to get it on the trail again. It's got the Ford/New Holland 7.8 liter, still runs strong, but we can't get the power steering (okay, power assist steering) to work. Have changed out the gearbox, the pump, pulled the filter out of the reservoir, no positive results. It can be driven, but the younger generation don't understand the health benefits of steering the beast with just driver power.
Any ideas? Any similar issues? I'm at a loss.

Thanks
Bill

Did you check to make sure that you don't have a kingpin that is not seized up? I remember having a similar problem that just required greasing the kingpins, while someone turns the steering wheel back and forth.

I agree, take the drag link loose and see if the steering wheel turns free. Then turn the wheels and see how they do. If the wheels are hard to turn, take the tie rod ends loose and see if it's both or one.

Thanks for the tips. The bus we're working on had been 'retired' by the mountain a few years back. A few guys had their hand trying to fix it (with no record keeping. It was the gearbox. They had replaced the pump before, had pretty low pressure (I didn't know the numbers, just seemed low.) We found the old pump and installed, all working well now.

Now to figure out the parking brake.

Again, thanks.
