I have a 02 TC 2000 with the cummins . Lately the service engine soon light will come on . When it does bus loses power . When it goes off bus will pick speed . I used my scan tool but it doesn't match Cummins DTC's . It does say a speed sensor . What and where is it and does anybody have a number for it ? When I call Cummins they act like there is no such thing . I did watch the dash and maintenance reminder light came on and then switched to service engine soon . And for what's it worth I got codes 51 , 190 , and 233 .This is what my Genisys 3.0 showed Thanks |

Dont understand fully but sounds like could be speed sensor most likely on the output shaft of the trans , or check cam crank sensors.

The driver reports bus goes great light comes on she says she loses power . Light goes off and power is back to the engine .I had another Cummins that would do that and same issue . Got rid of bus before we fixed it . |

190 is engine speed sensor loss of signal/erratic/unreasonable.
9 times out of 10 when one of our 5.9 ISB's is acting this way, it is the engine speed sensor located behind the starter in the side of the block. About $60.
233 I think is fuel pump related...might be 2 problems here but again, 9 times out of 10 the sensor cures all for us. We had 11 of these at one point in time. |

Thanks Thomas ...you wouldn't happen to have a part number ? Are they all the same sensor ? |

4921601 is what mine use...that's a Cummins #. $69.70 a couple of weeks ago from the Blue Bird dealer. I've had guys tell me they have had no luck with aftermarket ones.

Thomas I just crawled under the bus and I see a sensor behind the starter and if I look above it there is another one that is round and closer to the head . Any idea wich one is which ? |

The one we replaced frequently is behind the starter, down low. It's easier to take the stupid starter off to get to it...that one. |

I guess I never really paid attention but it would have to be crank sensor down that low. |

Yes, the crank sensor is just above the starter. |

We have an '02 5.9 Cummins ISB in a bus that had similar issues and installing a new speed (CPS) sensor took care of it, however this sensor is located on the left (drivers) side of the block toward the back on the bottom. I bought the sensor from carquest (XFP4921601) and also replaced the pigtail (XIP3823254). |

ive seen that code 51 before. it is usually the lift pump. as far as the speed sensor i would image that is an allison transmission so you would need an allison part not cummins. ive used speed sensors on these through the regular GM dealer because they use allison transmissions as well i used gm#29536408 sensor and GM#88987993 harness if the harness is bad or melted. |

You are thinking of the speed sensors on the 2000 or 3000 transmission, this is a Cummins sensor in question. An "02" could still have a 545 or 643 depending on when the bus was actually made.
I'm hoping he can avoid a lift pump, we have seen that code along side of the speed sensor code many times and it has gone inactive as soon as the speed sensor gets changed. Then there's the 10th time out of 10 when it doesn't. |

I am sorry been off here awhile . My up date is I replaced the sensor behind the starter . Started bus up no light . Went on drive light came on again . The code for the sensor is gone but I show a code 51 . Says it's unidentifiable .Now I heard someone say it might be a bad lift pump . Cameback to garage and light was off and no codes . Sat there for a few minutes light came back on and reset a code . Does light come on with emission problems ? Seems like when it's idling light goes off and when I accelerate light comes back . Where should I start looking ? Thanks |

On a lot of older buses that had the VP44 lift pump retro work some of the buses got a new circuit adding a check engine feature so the main pump didn't get roached. The first time one of my Thomas buses set it off it said something like "optional factory circuit"
Before this feature the injection pump failing was the first warning you would get. Fairly expensive... |

New member, 1st. post.
We have a 2000 TC1000 with a 5.9 Cummins and have had a similar issue with a 190 code (no rpm signal in our case). It de-rated power when on and gave a lumpy idle. I cleared it several times on a 1200 mile trip. (Our bus is an RV) My resolution was to unplug the multi-pin connector, coat the female end with some dielectric grease and re-plug. After many trouble free miles, no codes have appeared. |
