I need to replace a couple of roof hatches, originals were Specialty #9245-0200. They are both cracked around the hinge and one is bent after a too close encounter with an overhead door.
What do you guys like? Has anyone used a Spheros brand "Smart Hatch"?

I have been using the Sphero Smart hatches for about year now and like them very much. Easy to install and has the sealing material all ready on it.

Dealer shows one with "internal mount, 550886"

and one with "external mount, 550887"

Maybe a stupid question but how to I determine which one I want?

I buy mine from heavy duty bus parts. Part number 12-13503 for $241.99 the last time I bought them.

Factory hatches I had for a while were Specialty, they mounted with screws inside against interior roof panels then hatch came down against roof of bus...had a seal glued onto outside of bus....I disliked them as they always seemed to leak water inside...

After having multiple leaks and cracked/broken hatches with the Specialty version....I switched my bus bid to specify Transpec hatches and ended up changed most of older ones out to part# 2211898C1...these screw/mount on outside of bus and required moving supports on each side of hatch closer to opening, so I had something to put screws through... really was a simple retrofit... Last one I purchased in 2012 was 225.41 from dealer...

I personally like the Transpec style external mounts better as hatch seals against itself..and I can seal roof seam to not leak.. rather than pinching against roof like the Specialty does...

The difference I was told is the Specialty is low profile, but there is only slight difference in height above roof, maybe an inch...?.. between the two.. I have never had to replace a transpec.. I have never used them but if Sphero has both internal and external I would go with the external mount if it were me...

My vote for a replacement hatch goes to Transpec. I like the 1970 series and I can order an entire assembly for much cheaper than just the lid for the specialty lo pro.

Ready to set an external mount Smart Hatch in, have you had trouble pulling the paper from the sealing material?
