cranks but keeps cutting out. for a few months its been a recurring problem that ive repaired several times from loose connections, relays, worn out relay block terminals, wiring rubbed through where all the spaghetti is above the starter. after weeks of trouble free running, it happened again. this time its different. cranks fast and the starter "cuts out" once a second or so until it grinds on the flex plate. i unplugged the cam sensor so i can test circuits without the engine starting on me and it cranks normal. Question: though it sounds like a cam sensor, how can i test the signal without the software? or is there something else im missing or should do first? |

update: my generic code reader says 128 254 8 witch translates to "unexpected reset fault". i managed to get it started with a quick shot of ether and now i cant duplicate the problem. dont think its a cam sensor issue. ive got more wire gremlins to hunt down. |

Have you checked the wires on the IPR valve connector? Or try changing out the IPR valve with a known good one. Try the ICP sensor to. |

wiring ok and its the only dt ive got. found one of the relays in the rear run box was a little weak. this still doesnt explain why it would crank fine when i pulled the plug on the cam sensor. this one doesnt have the usual drivability issues with icp/ipr or even ecm power loss. ill see if its gone when i get to work tomorrow. |

unless I'm missing something, I don't think your codes are correct.
The 2000 generation IC's that I have flash codes in 3 number sequences only: 111, 222, 143, etc
I'd start by repulling the codes, clearing them, and then running it and see what comes back. |

That layout looks like SPN FMI coding. |

Have you checked the accessory power wires connected to the battery terminals. I was having an intermittent problem and found these connections were bad causing a ECM reset. |

update: replaced a couple suspect cables and wiring at the starter, and installed a booster relay on the starter. cranks hard and battery voltage doesnt drop as low as it had before. it has started every morning since. |

It is also called a soft start solenoid and improves the life of the starter. Your local starter and alternator rebuilder will have them. |

do you have an oscilloscope you can test it with one of those its not a hall effect switch though. it yours will have a positive and negative wire and it draws up and down NO 5 volt ref, ground or signal wire. yours will be magnetic and should have a signal signiture that looks like a heart beat not a square wave form. |
