I have a 2001 BB on a 3800 chassis with a DT466. On a recent field trip the coolant decided to migrate to the oil pan. Engine knocks severely.
The bus has 120,000+ miles and 10,000+ hrs.

How would your district handle this?

1. Park it.

2. Repair it.

3. Purchase new bus.

Depends on the bus. If the rest of the vehicle is trashed, it'll be the next thing we offer for trade or part out and scrap.

Can you "afford" to have it parked/sold off? I couldn't.

If the rest of the vehicle is otherwise serviceable, it'd be fixed. Assuming you don't go the in-frame route, which I don't think I would since it knocks (might mean a crankshaft added to the bill), you're looking at roughly $15,000 for a running reman and related materials (based on one I did last year).

I haven't done a DT inframe in over 10 years...would $5000 (including sending head to machine shop + crankshaft) be a reasonable price?

$15,000 vs $85,000 AND it's a pre-emissions bus. I'd say fix it unless it's too far gone.

i just did a swap last year on a 2000 amtran with the 466e, and about 320k miles on it. got a reviva reman and now its pushing 400,000. its not in the best shape but i couldnt afford to let it go. as i purchase new buses itll become a decent spare in a few years.

I've been trying to get the boss to drop the fleet by one bus for years.
Each year I have one or two buses that suck up money and work less than 100 miles.
This bus is a spare.
I'm in northern Ohio and rust is an issue with 15 year old buses.

I'd vote for "It's done" then.

DT466 liner seals are a weak spot, but their lower ends are pretty bullet proof. I would invest about 3 hours taking a look at the rod and main bearings. If the journals look good an in-frame could be the way to go. You may also need a cylinder head. Since the engine is toast anyway you can use an impact wrench, gently.
