Not bus related, but wondering if anyone has ever had to do the cam phasers or a 5.4 Triton v8? It has developed an awful ticking noise that seems too loud to be an exhaust leak, so signs are pointing to cam phasers and/or lifters sticking. Any advice would be appreciated.

check base oil pressure hot, common failure is the gallery to the right cam plugs or restricts and takes out the cam journals or the chain tensioner blows a gasket dropping oil press.
this is a related tsb that helps determine if phazers or other noise.

So I found out by pulling the valve cover that this engine is a 2V engine and does not utilize the cam phasers. Does not appear that there is an exhaust leak either.

Hello below is the identifix for pre phasers. We actually saw a cap plugged and not allowing oil on that bank making noise. Reading this post on identifix how ever most guys actually had loose spark plugs making noise usually just one plug. Good luck.

Customer Concern:
Valve train noise after engine is warm. Noise seems to come from RH valve cover and RH exhaust pipe ahead of converter. Removed RH valve cover and found no visual problems with cam followers or valve springs.

Tests/Procedures:
1. If the noise sounds as if it is a stuck tappet, the cam cap oil passage(s) may be plugged, causing oil starvation to the affected cylinder head(s).

2. Engines with this condition have low oil pressure at one cylinder head only, while main pressures are normal. Dislodged material from the oil filter blocks the cam cap oil passage, either at cylinder #4 (right bank rear) or cylinder #5 (left bank front).

3. For Variable Cam Timing (VCT) equipped engines, inspect the VCT valve body and the oil passages under the first cam cap.

Found one plug that was loose. Both heads have already had inserts put in them, so I am waiting on a repair kit that will hopefully put a better insert in the heads and keep the plugs in them. If it doesn't work, looks like we may be buying some reman heads.
