My dad recently bought a International 4900 with the dt466e motor for his container business. He put all new injectors in. Here's the problem. the truck idles fine and runs great. It will shift like its suppose to and then will fall on its face and start a knocking noise towards the top end. Get out of the pedal and let it idle and it will stop and run fine again for about a 100 yards and start to act up again. no check engine light is coming on. any ideas?

First why did he change injectors was he engine running rough, smoking.
What year of dt466e is it not sure but i think some years of these have an egr valve .
Any smoke from exhaust when this happens(egr staying open and suffocating the engine)
Sounds like a fuel knock when demanding fuel
Is the fuel lift pump working properly?
Anything with the HPOP should set a code ut i've seen the IPR with a broken screen cause strange issues
If this engine worked before the injectors then recheck what you've done maybe something didn't seat correctly

OEM trained in wiring and all engine platforms for over 20 years

agree with Bluenozer- the sound you are describing sounds like a fuel issue. These things knock horribly when fuel is running out, when it's sucking air, or when getting the fuel system primed after a big change.

among answering Blluenozers questions, check all fuel lines an connections to be sure they aren't sucking air.

Sounds like the check ball under the cap on the fuel filter in front of the strainer is coming apart. Look for the missing piece behind the outlet tube fitting going to the head, you may have to fish with a pick. Quite common on these older units. Will cause a drop in fuel pressure and starve the injectors for fuel when the broken part blocks the fitting.
