Is it possible to change a rotary door switch to either a toggle or rocker type switch. If so how and what switch should I use

You'll have to determine the number of circuits in the switch. Most I've seen have had 3.

1. 12v to door solenoid
2. 12v to step lamp
3. Ground to flasher

Any DPDT switch would work if you combined the two 12v circuits, or if that isn't permissible you'll have to incorporate a relay to handle the 3rd circuit.
