I've got Thomas Built EFs ranging from 2007-2010 units. They are government buses, but are the same as a school bus in a lot of ways. This is a constant issue we are having with them, even tho I lubricate them and they are opened daily during pre-trips. The rear emergency door sags, comes in contact with the door check, and makes it nearly impossible to open. I've been sending them to the garage for this, and they've even replaced the original door hinges with aftermarket parts that were supposed to be better. Well. they aren't.
I've been working in the bus industry for a little while now, and I feel silly asking this question. Is there anything I can do (I'm not a mechanic) to these units to keep this from happening? Any suggestions would be helpful. |

The only reason I can think of for emergency door sag on Thomas EFs of that vintage is the hinge is becoming distorted, the only 2 reasons I can think of for that to happen is either rusty seized hinges or people operating the emergency door that have no clue of how the door hold open mechanism works. If they try and force door closed against the hold open mechanism they will distort either the door or the hinge. |
Why yes, the ORIGinal CHARGER is a Fastback |

I've never seen any of the drivers do this, but it is possible. Being that it is happening on the "aftermarket" hinges, thats probably the case. When the hinges are working right, I have no problem getting them to close. |
