I was haunted by this one a few years back in California. The driver is innocent until proven guilty...so she went to court and the judge offered her traffic school. She didnt lose a day of work.

In my District, if a bus driver has an accident while transporting children, during their porbation, they are terminated!

Not real sure on this one. As far as I can remember, we haven't ever had one. Maybe we have been lucky. But if it did happen I am sure it would be suspended and or terminated depending on the curcumstances. Accidents are something that goes by each accident. But my views on accidents are different then the owners. If it's your fault you should either pay to have the bus fixed. (saves on insurance claims) OR Suspended/terminated.

I am glad you brought this up. We are currently re-writing the policy/procedure manuel here. I did not think to add this one. I am leaning towards (I have only just read and thought about it) termination. Why? If a driver speeds the likelyness of an accident increases. All the routes here are given plenty of time to complete. I will have to give things more thought before any finale decision but it would be negligence on the drivers part. I imagine legally parents could also claim endangerment to the child. Sound like lawsuit to me.

I think at worst it should be suspension. 2 over is considered speeding and it could simply be an accident or the angle of viewing the speedometer. So, if a driver was going 2 over (which can get you 2 points in MI because 1-5 over is 2 points) you would fire them? Jeez!

I agree with Mike on this issue. For Pete's sake, how are you going to fire someone for going 2-5 MPH over the speed limit.
Just look at most International speedometers, they're not even close to accurate!!! They read 5 MPH when the bus isn't even moving!!!!!!!!!!!
When you get to say, 7 MPH or more over, that is unacceptable.

First of all, what do you define as a speeding ticket?
I define a speeding ticket as 10 MPH over the speed limit. Some can argue that a bus should do exactly the speed limit, well folks, a bus that is doing the speed limit while others are going 10-15 MPH over the limit is impeding traffic. A vehicle that is impeding the flow of traffic is considered a hazard, according to most state's driving regulations.
A school bus should not have to speed to keep up with traffic, but perhaps going no more than 5 MPH over the limit would not be harmful. We shouldn't have to account for other driver's stupidity by speeding, but a bus load of children is at stake for becoming a potential hazard for traffic.

10mph over is to much. If they are in a certain situation that it is unsafe for them to go the speed limit suchs as the cars are all passing the bus and stuff. They should not be fired. 5 is ok but 10 over is bad and they should recieve a punishment.

I agree with ThomasVista2012...I will admit that in a 25MPH zone, I do not do exactly 25MPH..especially since my auto trans on my Thomas ER wants to shift at 25MPH..it's such a pain trying to keep the bus at that speed, and I'm sure it can't be good on the transmission! I am very cautious with students on, but I will say that without students on and conditions permitting...I give the engine a good workout from time to time. (I think we all do!) That's my 2cents

Hey People, WE all know they give SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS a route they can't possibly keep on time so you got to know when to hold them and when to fold them.

Hey, check this out!! The district that I drive for has a policy that if I, in my own car, I get a speeding ticket that is for more than 15 MPH over the limit....I'm FIRED!!! They run our records at least twice a year. I don't have a lead foot, so I'm not really worried.
I have mixed feelings on this. I can see the point that you want a safe driver all around, and that those bad personal habits might creep over into the bus. But on the other hand, it's kind of "Big Brother-ish". A DUI or possesion charge I understand, but this seems kind of drastic.
As far as speeding in the bus I would say 1st time write up, 2nd time 1 day suspension, 3rd time fired. If a limit (like our over 15mph one) was in effect I could see that as a termination immediately. Thats not speeding, thats wreckless if you have students on board.
Super Day! hps

We do a 3 day suspension for tickets and preventable accidents, along with re-training. Too many tickets or accidents could lead to termination.
