I have a 97 T444e with a 223 error code, it runs good but started smoking. The smoking started abruptly on a long trip. What does the VPM do and would it cause the excessive smoke. It has less than 100K miles on it.

VPM Vehicle Personality Module. With this code being active the engine will operate in default mode. So yes, excessive smoke is possble.
