I have a 1998 Freightliner school bus with 5.9 Cummins that starts for 10 seconds then shuts off. Sometimes engine runs smooth, sometimes the engine surges up and down, but shuts off after 10 seconds. Cummins Insite pulled an unknown code 2559. I called Cummins and they told me to try the following: 1. Replace the boost pressure sensor 2. Replace the air temp sensor None of those worked so I tried replacing the cam sensor and the crank sensor and that didn't work either. I'm thinking electric fuel pump, or like the Cummins guy said the ECM may need to be flashed. Any thoughts??? |

Here's a TSB that may relate, would need your ESN to verify:
Cummins Inc. Technical Service Bulletin Subject False Flagging of Fault Code 2559 Original Early Field Notification Number: e09072. Issue
The purpose of this EFN is to notify the field of a software problem that can cause Fault Code 2559 to become active, and then cause a subsequent engine shutdown. Verification
ISBe3 CM800 (4 & 6 Cylinder)
Fault Code 2559 was not used for this product and is not supposed to become active. If the fault code does become active due to this problem, the ECM needs to be calibrated to the latest revision.
Fault Code 2559 Active?
Software issue
None Resolution
Use the latest revision on “INCAL™” to calibrate the ECM and be sure to check the “Calibration History Sheet” for the latest revision updates. | Thanks for the information. Exactly what the Cummins guy said that the ECM will probably need to be flashed/re-calibrated. |

| Update: Had a mobile technician come by to calibrate ECM per unknown code. Technician was not able to communicate with the ECM, meaning ECM took a dump. So before purchasing an ECM, I swapped out the ECM with exact same bus to see if would fix the problem. Good ECM started and ran the bus just fine. Swapping the ECM's confirmed it, ECM is NO BUENO. |

| That's the benefit of purchasing multiple buses at a time - known good parts! |
