I've heard many of our clients prefer having a sort of tryout period for new technicians in their fleet maintenance departments. The new member will shadow relevant people to get up to speed, and senior members are expected to assess newer technicians. It's not quite an apprenticeship, but it's ideal since it's how many maintenance techs are used to training anyway.
