Thinking about doing are own engine repairs in house it been a number of years since I done engine work we have two DT466E non EGR motors that have excessive blow by and condensation. My question is how critical is checking bearings with crush tape, and liner clearance,ETC. |

| We have done this both ways, in frame and reman exchange. Look at your numbers real close, include all of the overhead costs, incidental parts and supplies. When you do this yourself in-house you get no warranty. Dealer installing reman engine in my opinion is best option. Warranty on the engine and labor. And the complete engine is reman. Doing the works kit, when you get head off, may need to redo or order head, same with turbo. Front and rear seals, main bearings, etc. Are another unknown until teardown. And no matter how good or how careful you are we all make mistakes and that comes with no warranty. We have experienced trouble with front cover gaskets on these engines. Have one right now was in framed 14 months ago and gasket between block and cover is leaking. Rad, valve train, cam all have to come out to fix. Another reason for reman exchange. Just my experience and opinion, Ross |

| We do all of our own in frame over hauls and out of frame major overhauls. We buy the engine kits from IH and send the head out for repair. You always do the head on an overhaul and Should send the rods out for checking and reconditioning. An overhaul is not something you want to try and cut corners. If you pull the front cover to reseal it the oil pressure regulater or reliefe valve is behind it. The other is behind the oil cooler. I forget which is where. I have been a diesel mechanic for over 20 years and have never plasti gauged a diesel engine. Gas engines I sometimes do. It is better and less expensive to rebuild your own DT's, B sereis cummins you have to exchange because there are no liners that can be replaced. I would be glad to answer any questions that you may have as you do your rebuild. |
