We thought you might be interested to read this week's blog post on what puts a school bus immediately out of service. Weigh in on the post with your state's and/or operation's policies.
Interesting reading. So the NCST says if you have one headlight out that it should be out of service? I don't have enough personnel or spares to support that. lol
There is a county here in Va. thats policy is if a child was to get on the bus and say "Mr. Hardy you have a headlight out" , Mr. Hardy is supposed to pull off the road and call the shop. Thats what a driver told me several years ago. I couldnt believe it but I guess for liability they feel its unsafe. I tell my drivers if its light enough just turn them off until you get to school.....lol
I agree with the out of service rules as posted. That is how our operation runs. Please notice that it says low beam out, most buses high beams are not that much brighter we tell our drivers to turn on the brights and bring it into the shop. The (8) eight ways are another story when they quit the driver goes immediatly to the school and another driver picks up the slack or we take them a sub bus no question about the safety of students. If a unit has a breakdown on the road we usually ask for assistance from law inforcment, use our safty truck and a spare to block the road to tranfer students.
