Just reminded on how stupid/silly some drivers can be. 2 times in the last year I have had cars pass my stopped School Bus at the same location and have immediately been pulled over and cited. Just 2 days ago I was stopped and the first car to approach and stop in the inside lane (5 lanes) was a city police officer. I had counted about 5 students onto the bus when I saw a car coming up and passing. Before I could even honk my horn, the officer had activated his lights and siren to pull the motorist over. I just wish they would put a car in the strip mall across the street. There are several days a month that I have someone pass me there. The students all live in the apartment complex, but I have had a small one see a parent across the street and cross over without my permission.

Too bad you can't have a spike strip deploy from underneath the bus with the red warning system ;)

I had two other ideas -

1. A metal spike with a flag on the end is fired into the passing car.

2. Using the air system, spray a highly visible chemical solution onto the passing car. The cleaning material would only be available from the police.

Talk to your TD about the small one haveing to cross the road. Could you or another bus do a pickup on his side of the road. Studies have shone that most children struck by autos while going to their school bus were crossing a road when struck. I had a 6 year old who had to cross a street. His Mom waited, and I told him to look at me and not cross till I gave the go ahead. Iwaisted my breath. I asked to move his stop to the other side of the street, and recieved it. called his mom and told her of the change and that I would pass the stop and after three more stops, would return with her child in about half an hour. She was greatful as Jr. scaired her crossing. Problem solved plus added half hour to route. Thats two and a half hours extra pay per week. Win-Win situation.

Shiny side up

Greasy side down

Mr. Dave,

Just to clarify - they are not supposed to cross the road. However, there is a laundrymat (SP) across the road that some of the parents use.
