Charges were pending against the driver of a school bus that struck a crossing guard Wednesday morning in Glen Burnie, according to an Anne Arundel County police spokesman.
Vicki Lynn Whitehead, 54, was in the crosswalk to help a student cross Furnace Avenue near Point Pleasant Elementary School when she was struck by the bus as it turned from Sunny Brook Drive about 7:40 a.m., said the spokesman, Justin Mulcahy.
Whitehead was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she was in serious condition, Mulcahy said.
Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol contributed to the crash, he said, and it appeared that the driver, 53-year-old Lisa Smith Grant, failed to yield to the crossing guard. Charges were pending consultation with the Anne Arundel County state's attorney's office, Mulcahy said.
Grant and four Point Pleasant students aboard were not injured, according to Bob Mosier, an Arundel schools spokesman. He said those students and three others who were walking nearby were meeting with counselors Wednesday, and their families were notified.
