Anyone notice that for 2012 IC RE's the rear emergency exit hatch has been redesigned? Here's a comparison:

2012 model IC RE: http://www.schoolbusland.com/international/images/CB397070-3.JPG here's the inside: http://www.schoolbusland.com/international/images/CB379070-6.JPG

2011 model IC RE: http://www.schoolbusland.com/international/images/BB318878-3.JPG here's the inside: http://www.schoolbusland.com/international/images/BB318878-8.JPG

My opinion on the new hatch is is that I kinda like the circular design better. The squarer one is nice as well.

What's your opinion?

It looks to me like the new, squarer one has interior hinges. You can see them above it on the interior shot. Good for IC. That will help on maintenance. The grease fittings for the exterior hinges on my Blue Bird are only good for a year from new. After that, you gotta WD-40 them every week.

I like the interior hinges, only thing is the window escape size looks a bit smaller.

Also, this might be an option and not something that is standard. Saw photos of other 2012s with the typical round window.

My 2012's still use the round window, which I prefer. Like Rich said, it's possibly an option.

Just to add another thing I noticed, the side radiator has been redesigned as well. http://www.schoolbusland.com/international/images/CB379070-4.JPG . Compared to: http://www.schoolbusland.com/international/images/BB318878-4.JPG .

very interesting!

There were two brand-new IC RE's at Midwest Transit (Whitestown, Indiana, location) last week with that squared-off emergency exit as well as the different radiator venting on the side. I didn't even notice it until now.

Its probably not so much an option but a change in design as of the start of January 2011.

I think the new design looks better on the outside and the old one better on the inside (not because of the hinges, but the shape). It's great that the moved the hinges to the inside; they've been doing that for years with the doors.

Interesting, the 2011 RE that is shown in the original posts has gray seats, black window frames, and A/C, and the newer one has brown seats, silver window frames, and no A/C. Less money to spend? No need for nice specs later on?

I didn't realize that the new radiator design was simply an enlargement off of the existing opening. For some reason I was thinking that the actual grilles were designed in addition to being enlarged. Either way, I think IC did a good job with the new one.

Eric, it may be that the two RE's are going to completely different school districts that don't spec the same things.

The new grille layout simply took over the space where the small site door was before. The larger grille there is an emissions thing to allow proper engine venting.

Could be, Tatum. I just assumed they were from the same place because the photos at SBF tend to mostly come from the same location/photographer from what I can tell.

Kodie, do you know what exactly has changed to require more venting? Is it because of the downstream injection system for regeneration creating more heat, or some other added emissions system, or something with the engine itself?

^The pictures at School Bus Land are taken at Midwest Transit, one of the largest school bus dealerships in America. That might be why they aren't spec'd the same.

They had to redesign the cooling package because of the 2010 emissions.

I imagine it takes quite a bit to cool a rear engine bus with the new emissions package. Heck, even Thomas had to add vents to the rear door to keep the Cummins engine cooler, and they are supposed to use less heat than a MFDT.

We have some 2011 RE's with the new side radiator and old window design. I think it's an feature, agreed with Rich.

IC Bus.. The company that makes Thomas Built fan hide in shame. :)

Whatever you do with those new IC RE rear windows...do not open the engine compartment hatch if the window latch lever is released (pointing down). The hatch will hit the lever and put a dent in the hatch.

ME TOO! BUT THE OLD RADIATOR DESIGN LOOKS BETTER. THE NEW DESIGN IS WEIRD!
