Trumbull School Bus Driver Found Texting While Driving, Police Said
Police Say Driver Sent And Received More Than 1,000 Texts

By HILLARY FEDERICO, hfederico@courant.com

The Hartford Courant

7:54 PM EDT, March 16, 2011

A school bus driver is facing risk of injury charges after video footage from her bus showed her texting while driving.

Police said Evelyn Guzman, 47, of Henry Avenue, Stratford, turned herself in on a warrant for her arrest. She is charged with risk of injury to a minor and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Her arrest stems from a 10-month investigation that began after police received an assault complaint about Guzman's daughter, Jennifer Davila.

Deputy Police Chief Michael Harry said officers received a call from the parents of a 9-year-old autistic girl, a passenger on Guzman's bus. Her parents said they were concerned that the girl repeatedly came home with bruises on her hands and arms. The girl was one of nine students with disabilities who regularly rode the bus.

Davila, a school bus monitor, was charged in August with the assault of the 9-year-old while on the bus.

Police said video footage obtained from the First Student Bus Co. showed that Guzman sent and received a total of 1,068 text messages between April 6 and May 15, 2010.

A representative from the bus company could not be immediately reached for comment.

Guzman was released on $1,500 bail and is due in court on March 25.

Unbelievable, the whole family needs to stay away from schools and children altogether! Not at all concerned about their safety. At least the mother turned herself in.

There's been so much of this in the press these past few years. Our industry suffers every time this sort of thing happens, yet it continues to happen, seems worse over the years. Uncertain if simply more press coverage, indifference on the part of some providers, or a different type of person invading this industry. The economy does not seem to make any difference in the quality of candidates, desperation seems too often the initial motivation to drive a school bus. The assertion that there are many great drivers may be true but does not cover the bad ones. Sad that so many still define kids as cargo and use other trucker terms to define children and this industry. If it all begins with attitude then 'precious lives' ought to define what our industry transports, not cargo. And hire accordingly at all levels of this industry. (jk)
