School traffic causes chaos

The implementation of bus transportation fees has more parents driving their kids to school, sparking chaos in some drop-off zones.
Teachers and administrators are often the ones who bear the responsibility of maintaining a steady flow of vehicles while ensuring the safety of children walking or running through the parking lots. Most of them have little or no training on directing traffic, and if you add the cell phone variable into the equation, it could be a matter of time before tragedy strikes.
The morning and afternoon rushes at Redstone Elementary School prompted principal Laura Wilson to issue a letter to parents reminding them of the dangers of inattentive driving and letting kids out in the middle of the street.
The Douglas County School District Board of Education approved 50-cent-per-ride bus trips this year because of funding constraints, causing some parents to shuttle their kids to and from school.
In the letter sent to parents Aug. 13, Wilson detailed “numerous traffic violations” that she had witnessed in the preceding days while supervising the pick-up and drop-off area. They included parents making illegal U-turns in front of buses or cars in the street, driving out through the “in” lane, and looking at their cell phones and “not paying attention to the flow of traffic,” causing it to back up, the letter says.
The issue has gotten so bad that the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office plans to study the traffic around Redstone Elementary and make any suggestions to decrease the congestion. ...
