Bus Drivers Refuse After-School Trips
Work Action Lasts More Than Week So Far In Wicomico County
Aug 21 2010 WBAL-TV, Baltimore SALISBURY, Md. -- School bus drivers for Wicomico County public schools are refusing to transport students to extracurricular activities outside of regular school hours.
The work action has lasted 10 days so far. It comes after the school board did not respond to the contractors' request for a meeting to discuss grievances.
Wicomico County Bus Contractors Association President Ernie Davis said drivers will continue refusing extra rides until they get a meeting. Davis said the dispute centers on disrespectful treatment, not money.
Schools spokeswoman Tracy Sahler said the school system will use private coaches and school buses hired from other counties for such activities as band and sports trips. Sahler said some trips will cost two to three times as much as a school bus, and some field trips may be canceled.
