We have recently jumped from 40 buses in 2000 to 47 today with plans to add more in the near future, or so I've been told. Our fleet is primarily Blue Bird with a couple of IC's and three or four Thomas's. The age of the buses range from units delivered this school year (Dec and Jan) to four units delivered in 1990. Our engines are nearly all International 466 or 444's with a few Cummins thrown in. All front engines in the transits. I'm told that we will only be getting transit style buses in the future. (72 pass and up) I drive a 1990 Thomas which I enjoy, it may only be a 65 passenger bus but it is heavy, solid, and other than the clearcoat pealing in places still looks good from the outside anyway. I've heard the mechanics talking about what our winter road treatments have done to the places you can't see. I'm not looking forward to its retirement, it may be slow, but it is reliable and thats what I like. (I drove an 06 blue bird conventional yesterday on an athletic trip temp was below zero when we left with wind chills in the 25 to 35 below range. The route to the event was such that the wind hit us broadside on the drivers side. It didn't affect the driving all that much, but I froze with a draft coming through the heater box access panel. I hope that isn't normal)

I don't think it exists(it may have in the past). Some buses, such as 36, have been "eliminated" over the years, bus 36's route was split up between other routes. I'm not sure of the exact reason though.

Our district uses 3 different contractors , the main one being First Student Canada , we use Corbiels 3800 T444E internationals , all are between 1996 and 2008 models , not everyone knows this but our unit numbers tell you what year the bus is ie (919819)is a 1999, the first and last number are the year of the unit .

all of the buses we currently operate are former Laidlaw Transit buses , but rumor has it our 1996 ~ 1999 buses will be replaced by spring 09.

For some reason this old thread just popped up in my active topics list.

Here's our roster. The "Intl 3000 SER" buses are AmTran FEs. 17 is the first-gen CE with T444E. 19 and 22 are Futuras with VT-365s. 4 (my bus) has a MaxxForce DT. Bus 9 is actually 60-pass + 1 wheelchair in a 71-pass. shell.

Buses 3 and 8 are MidBus/Chevys, 15 is a MidBus/Ford, and 26 is a GMC MicroBird. We recently disposed of 23, also a GMC MicroBird. No bus was purchased in place of it as the special ed routes have been consolidated. All the type As are diesels.

Bus 25 has a severe oil leak that, from the sounds of it, cannot be fixed. So bus 9 is now on 25's route.

The EFs are my favorite buses, but they are very unreliable (electrical problems) compared to the CEs. The TCs used to be out a lot, but they seem to get better with age. The AmTran FEs had been very reliable, but are having more problems as they age, including AT-545 death.

AT545s are one of the best transmissions ever, in my opinion. I'm surprised to hear they're 'dying' on your school's buses.

^ They are hard shifting transmissions, that were meant to be cheap enough for districts that wanted an automatic transmission, but didn't want the cost. (cheap I guess is a word that could have sum'd this up.....)

I don't care for this transmission myself. They seem to be hard shifting when coupled with a international engine...

I've read on this very forum recently about the DT466E being a high-torque engine and the AT-545 being just barely enough to handle it. So the DT466E eats up the AT-545s. The 545s are fine in the TCs, though. I get the impression that the 545 is better suited for pickup trucks and type As, not big buses with big engines.

Exactly, it's a great transmission for a light-duty application like a pickup or van. The 4-speed AT-545 struggles to pull a full-size bus up a hill, especially since it doesn't have a lock-up torque converter. The "light duty" option for a full-size bus is now the PTS2500, which has 5 gears and a lock-up. I've driven otherwise-identical buses (72pax, T444E 190) with the AT-545 and the 2000 (precursor to the PTS2500) and there's a world of difference in power, both in take-off and hill-climbing.

It all depends on how much horsepower the DT466 or DT466E is spec'd with. A 220 HP DT466/DT466E would not work with an AT545 at all. Of course a DT466/DT466E would eat up an AT545 when the torque is adjusted way past what an AT545 can handle.

The Cummins 5.9L puts out 400 pound feet of torque. The AT545 can accommodate 500. So that's maybe why the AT545 feels a little bit better with a Cummins?

Also, engine power doesn't necessarily make a bus climb hills fast or take off fast, but rather the rear end gear ratio helps decide those factors.
