Thursday April 20, 2006 - AMHERST, Nova Scotia, Canada — Cumberland County school bus drivers went on strike against their employer, Laidlaw Education Services, on Jan. 9, with the main issues of wages and benefits. The strike ended Feb. 8 after the regional school board threatened to pull the contract if there was no settlement. Both parties agreed to binding, final-offer arbitration. The arbitraror ruled in favour of the company. Besides the wage decision, the arbitrator’s ruling also means a benefit package, similar to the one board-employed bus drivers in the Truro area have in their contract, will not be forthcoming.
