VIDEO: Bus driver allegedly kicks special-needs student

TAMPA, Fla. — A former bus driver for Hillsborough County School District faces a charge of aggravated child abuse for an incident caught on video in which she allegedly kicks an autistic student, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The incident occurred in September, and the video was released by the Hillsborough State Attorney's Office in late March. It shows Stephanie Wilkerson on the bus with students, and a child hesitates on the bus’ stairs while another stands behind Wilkerson. Shortly thereafter, Wilkerson thrusts her left foot forward, and it makes contact with the child on the stairs, who falls and rolls around on the ground. Wilkerson is shown getting off the bus, where several adults hover around the girl. Police said she broke her ankle in the fall.

A spokesperson for Hillsborough County School District told The Tampa Bay Times that Wilkerson was immediately suspended after the incident, and her employment was terminated. She was arrested in October, and she pled not guilty to the charge against her.

Why is this driver not in jail where she should be. I have worked in the field of special education for 35 years as transportation supervisor, never every would any of my staff even consider doing something like this. Lose her job YES go to jail for a while YES, no excuse for her, and why was she not outside helping the child down the steps..... Tom Kurtz

That driver should be fired. Im a bus aide for special needs and I cannot imaging doing something like that. How would that driver like for the parents of that student do that to her?

This driver should be ashamed of her actions. Im a bus aide for special needs students and I could not imaging doing something like that. Im glad they let her go..

Disgusting! My mother is a bus matron for special needs students and this is APPALLING! If she was in such a rush for the girl to get down the stairs, why didn't she just take her by the hand and softly coax her down? She needs to be fired. Those parents trust her to help their children to and from school, not to injury and abuse them. Just wow...
