INDIANAPOLIS — A 43-year-old man was killed in a collision with a school bus on Tuesday morning, police said.

At about 8 a.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) were sent to respond to a report of a pedestrian having been struck by a school bus.

Witnesses told investigators that the bus driver was turning left on what appeared to be a green arrow when the collision with the pedestrian occurred.

When IMPD officers arrived on the scene, they found the man unresponsive and suffering from external and internal injuries. EMS crews arrived and pronounced the man dead.

Police said that the school bus driver, 41, was transporting one student, a 6-year-old girl, to an elementary school. The driver and the student were not injured.

The bus involved in the accident was from Perry Township Schools. Superintendent Thomas Little said that the bus driver immediately made contact with the district’s transportation department to request emergency personnel at the scene. The student was taken to school, parents were notified and support to the family is being provided by school personnel, Little said.

IMPD investigators are conducting a full accident investigation. They will be assisted by members of the Indiana State Police, who will do a mechanical inspection of the bus to ensure that it was operating properly.

IMPD said that the bus driver is fully cooperating with investigators. She will have her blood tested for illegal intoxicants, but investigators do not suspect that alcohol or speed played a factor in the accident, according to the IMPD.

In addition to the police investigation, Perry Township Schools has initiated an internal investigation in conjunction with the police department. District officials said that the bus driver has been placed on leave during the investigation, and counseling services are also being provided to her.

“Our thoughts and prayers are extended to all those involved during this very difficult time,” district officials said in a press release.
