ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — School officials praised the actions of a school bus driver who rescued several dozen students from a school bus before a fire spread in the bus, WESH 2 reports. No one was hurt in the incident.

A transportation supervisor told the news source that on Wednesday morning the driver heard a popping sound and saw smoke, so he quickly evacuated the students from the bus. A student aboard the bus told her aunt the bus stalled, the engine stopped running and “it just started smoking,” WESH 2 reports.

Fire moved through the bus from bumper to bumper, consuming the padding and exposing the steel, according to WESH 2. Fire crews on the scene told the news source something failed in the engine, but they don’t know the cause of the problem yet.

The bus driver resumed work with a replacement bus in the afternoon, according to WESH 2.
