RICHMOND, Calif. — Richmond Police Lt. Mark Gagan told KPIX that a father was charged with a 273 D — child abuse and corporal injury to a child — after following his 9-year-old autistic son onto a school bus and attacking his son’s bully last week.

Burnis Hurd's son pointed out an 11-year-old boy who had been bullying him, Gagan told the news outlet. Hurd grabbed the 11-year-old by the hair, raised the child out of his seat, pushed him on the side of the bus, threatened to kill him and used threatening language with other students on the bus, Gagan added. As a result, the boy got a cut on his earlobe and another wound on his cheek. He told the principal, which prompted a call to the police department, district officials told the news outlet.

Hurd was placed in jail on $50,000 bond.
