PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — An elementary student was seriously injured here on Tuesday when she was struck by a pickup truck that was illegally passing her school bus, The Florida Times-Union reports.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the bus was stopped with its stop arm and red lights activated around 3:20 p.m. As the 8-year-old girl was crossing the road, she was struck by the truck, which was being driven by a 17-year-old.

The girl was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but The Florida Times-Union reported on Wednesday that her condition was improving. The pickup truck driver was cited for passing a stopped school bus and striking the girl.
