OAKLAND, Maine — Officials said that a student suffered "severe bruising" but no broken bones when a school bus ran over his foot, the Morning Sentinel reports.
In the incident last Friday morning, the boy was reportedly taking a musical instrument out of the storage compartment under the bus. “The driver forgot to check this and started to depart and ran over the student’s foot,” Gary Smith, superintendent of Regional School Unit 18, told the newspaper.
School and district officials reportedly responded immediately, and the student was taken by ambulance to a medical center. The Morning Sentinel reports that the school safety committee decided later that day to halt the use of under-bus compartments on regular runs, and only bus drivers will be allowed to load or unload items from them on activity trips, although that could change.
