The head of a kindergarten in China’s rural Gansu province was sentenced to seven years in prison for a school bus crash that claimed the lives of 19 children and two adults last year, The Associated Press (AP) reports.

Li Jungang was convicted of a traffic accident crime for the November crash, in which a makeshift school bus serving Little Doctor Kindergarten collided head-on with a truck. The bus had been converted from a nine-seat freight van and was carrying 64 people at the time of the accident.

AP reports that the crash caused an uproar over school bus safety in rural China, where students often have to travel long distances to receive an education due to school closures resulting from a shortage in education funds.
