District, city officials work to brighten bus stops

The transportation director and a board member for a Florida school district are collaborating with Cape Coral’s councilman to move school bus stops from unlit spots to be located at light poles. So far, about 80 percent of the 5,000 stops in the city are lit.

The buses, produced by Zhengzhou Yutong Group Co. Ltd., are similar in appearance to the Type C school buses that are built in the U.S. They reportedly feature an enclosed ring structure around the body for impact resistance, and each seat is equipped with a seat belt.
New York legislators recognize state’s school bus drivers

On May 24, the state Senate adopted a resolution sponsored by Sen. William Larkin that declares Oct. 21, 2011, School Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Bus driver Maureen Moore has contacted Larkin since 2005 to request the adoption of the resolution. She tells SBF that her ultimate goal is to achieve a National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day.
Students help bus driver quit smoking

Jerry Hitchcock, who works for a Montana school district, decides to give up his 50-year habit after two sisters who ride his bus hide his cigarettes and tell him he should stop. He says the encouragement of the girls and the other passengers who ride his bus have helped him stick to his goal.

Approval rating rises in Missouri bus inspections

More than 12,000 school buses are inspected by the Missouri State Highway Patrol this year. The statewide approval rating is 87.7 percent, up from 84.3 percent in 2010.

Kim Koenigs, the mother of a student who befriended Kadyn Halverson, starts a "Kadyn's Law" Facebook page in honor of the girl, who was killed by a motorist who failed to stop as she was walking across a road to board her school bus. The page calls for legislation that would provide more stringent laws for drivers who illegally pass school buses.

Corey McCann alerts the bus driver to a 13-year-old girl who is having a seizure. The driver and another student lay the girl in the bus aisle while McCann radios the bus garage for help. Another student directs traffic around the bus from the back window.
Teen drives through stop sign, collides with bus

Bus drivers could be given authority to search students

Under a proposal before an Indiana district’s school board, a driver would have to have a reasonable suspicion that a student has an item or substance that puts others on the bus in danger. The driver would then have to get permission from the district’s transportation department before searching a student or his or her belongings.
